This brownie recipe was created to mimic the taste, texture, and ease of boxed brownies, so it’s perfect for whipping up any night of the week. Though these brownies were created to be similar to boxed brownies, using your own ingredients will produce an extra tasty result without any extra work!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 3/4 tsp sea salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup neutral oil (canola, grapeseed, olive oil)
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

Method

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Grease an 8″x8″ metal pan with a bit of cooking spray, line it with parchment paper, spraying the parchment paper with cooking spray as well. If you need to use a 9×9 pan, reduce the baking time by 10 – 20 minutes depending on your oven.  Add the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, chocolate chips, and salt in a medium bowl, whisking to combine and remove any lumps. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, oil, water, and vanilla until combined. Add the dry ingredients to the large bowl with the wet ingredients, and fold until the mixture is just combined and there are no dry spots in the batter. Pour the batter into the pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35 – 45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let the brownies cool for two hours before cutting them, this will ensure that they are still fudgy while being easy to slice.

Mix-Ins

If you want to take your brownies to the next level, the first place to start is using Dutch-processed cocoa powder (Ghirardelli and Hershey’s Special Dark are Dutch-processed options that are available at many grocery stores) and good-quality chocolate chips or a chopped chocolate bar. Dark chocolate with at least 72% cocoa powder will yield the best results.

To further enhance the taste of your brownies, sprinkle the top of the brownies with flakey sea salt just after they come out of the oven, or add crushed, salted pretzels to the top of the batter before baking the brownies. Of course, peanut butter, a mix of milk and dark chocolate, caramel, and maple-sweetened tahini are also wonderful mixed in.
