5 Sidewalk Chalk Games Kids Will Love

Chalk drawingIt can be said that sidewalk chalk games are a staple in American childhoods. Children can spend hours outdoors playing on the sidewalk with chalk, and the best part is that you only need one thing, chalk! Plus, not only are sidewalk chalk games entertaining, many can be highly educational, and promote counting, color recognition, and much more. That’s why our friends over at C.R.A.F.T. have put together this incredibly helpful list of the top five sidewalk chalk games for you and your family.

The Color Game

For this game, you’ll need to draw five to eight different colored circles, typically in rainbow order. Once you’ve done this, your work is pretty much over. Instruct the kids to run around the yard to find items to match each colored circle.

Shape Game

This game is perfect for the toddler in your life. Similar to the color game, draw out common shapes on the sidewalk such as circles, squares, stars, triangles, and more. Ask the kids to find similarly-shaped items as the ones drawn on the sidewalk. This is sure to keep your toddler entertained for a while as you watch.

Sidewalk ABC’s

This game is as simple as drawing out the ABC’s on the sidewalk. Once you’ve done that, have the kids draw an item that begins with each letter. The game is over once an item has been drawn for every letter. This game is good for a large group of children such as a classroom or birthday party.

Sidewalk Obstacle Course

This game is similar to hopscotch, but a little more intense. If you have a bigger group of kids it might be a good idea to draw two identical courses and have two teams do a relay-race style game. Obstacle course ideas could be leapfrog, follow drawn paw prints, spelling the child’s name, and much more.
