One of the best ways to beat the summer heat is to find the nearest source of water and jump in. If you’re lucky, you have access to a neighborhood pool. (If you’re really lucky, you may have one in your own backyard.) By the time August rolls around, though, the pool gang is usually getting tired of the same old water games. Marco Polo is fine for a few rounds, but after that it loses some spark. Below, we’ll refresh your list of pool entertainment with simple but fun activities that will keep everyone splashing away for the rest of the summer!
Cool Pool Games
Lotion up, grab your goggles, and have some wet, wild good fun with these pool games for the young and the young at heart.
- Beach Ball Race – Toss in large beach balls (one per swimmer) and see who can get theirs to the other side of the pool first.
- Ping-Pong Madness – Dump out a bag full of ping-pong balls and let the swimmers scramble to gather them all up.
- Sharks and Minnows – The shark stands in the middle of the pool while the other swimmers (the minnows) try to get past him or her without getting tagged.
- Chicken Fight – This classic game involves sitting on someone’s shoulders and trying to shove another player off someone else’s shoulders. This one is only fun in the water, of course.
- Coins on the Bottom – Scatter coins in the water and get the players to go on an underwater treasure hunt.
- Floatie Race – Grab an inflatable duck, a boogie board, a pool noodle, or anything else that floats and race someone to the other side of the pool. Splashing encouraged.
- Air Ball – Toss around a beach ball without letting it touch the water. It’s fun to see how long you can keep it going.
- Quick Jump Quiz – Players line up at the deep end and take turns jumping into the water while being asked trivia questions. They have to give the right answer before they hit the water.
